Recently, Dr. Chern had the profound opportunity to combine her passion for dentistry with her commitment to service through a mission trip to Peru with Flying Doctors of America.

Guided by her yogic practice, Dr. Chern sought a meaningful way to express gratitude and give back. She embraced the concept of Seva, the act of selfless service focused on the collective good rather than personal gain. This principle led her to the Flying Doctors of America, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing medical and dental care to underserved populations worldwide.

Dental Care Mission in Peru

Dr. Chern joined a team of like-minded healthcare professionals on a week-long mission to the Sacred Valley Region of Peru. Together, dentists, physicians, nurses, interpreters, and volunteers worked tirelessly to provide care to remote indigenous communities. Over the course of the trip, the team treated more than 600 patients who would otherwise have limited or no access to dental and medical services.

The mission involved setting up temporary outdoor clinics that moved from village to village, delivering care without the modern technology and diagnostics often available in traditional practices. Despite the challenges, the team’s dedication and compassion brought comfort and relief to countless individuals, leaving a lasting impact on both the community and Dr. Chern herself.

A Life-Changing Experience

The gratitude and warmth of the people she treated left an indelible mark on Dr. Chern. Despite her more than 20 years of dental practice, she recalls this mission as one of the most transformative and life-changing experiences of her career. “This trip combined two of my passions and to this date has been the most life-changing and transformative thing I have ever done,” Dr. Chern shared, “For me, this experience was an honor and a privilege. I thank everyone who entrusted our team with their care.”
